Arrival day was set for Monday the 18th but most showed up on Sunday. In all over 50 people from 18 states attended.
The first few days the weather was somewhat uncooperative. Monday was cool and a light rain fell most of the day.
Since it was arrival day no rides were planned and most went to downtown Custer to look around.
Tuesday: A group ride was planned for today. We had several options but the weather looked like it would be better if we rode east, so at 9:00 about twenty of us headed to the Badlands Natonal Park. We made a stop at Wall Drug Store for lunch and a look around. At 1:00 we met back at the parking lot and headed south to the park. The park looks like something from another planet. Amazing formations everywhere you look. Noel was our leader on this ride and his knowledge of the area was a huge help.
We made plenty of stops to take pictures. After riding through the park we rode west through Scenic, SD making our way to Rapid City and from there on to Custer. The weather had been good all day but it became clear the last 40 miles of this ride would be wet. The rain got heavy at times and the temps were cool. We all were glad to get back to the motel.
It was rainy the rest of the evening so everyone ended up drinking coffee and visiting in the motel lobby.
Wednesday: Cloudy skies and mist greeted us in the morning but the forecast called for clearing skies by the afternoon. There weren't any planned group rides today so everyone made plans and took off in different directions. Four of us deceided to see if the weather would permit us to make it to Devils Tower and on to Montana. We rode to Newcastle, WY. and decided to continue. The weather improved as we went and after stopping to look at Devils Tower we rode north clipping the corner of Montana and crossing it off our list. We made a stop in Belle Fourche to see the Geographic Center of the Nation marker before riding Spearfish Canyon. We made a stop at Bridal Falls, the recent rains had the falls flowing at a good rate. We arrived back at the motel under clear skies and just in time for some brats that Mike was nice enough to bring with him from Wisconsin. He even did the cooking. That evening several went to Mount Rushmore to see the lighting ceremony.
Thursday: The weatherman promised nice weather and he delivered. Everyone decided what they were doing for the day and took off around 9:00. Some of us went to see Mount Rushmore then ride both Iron Mountain Road and the Needles Highway.
Both roads are as crooked as they get. There are also tunnels on both of them and they offer fantastic scenery.
The landscape along the Needles Highway is unique and impressive. Thursday wrapped up with a finale dinner held at a local restaurant.
Friday: Sadly the rally was over. The weather hadn't always cooperated but we still managed to have a great time. It's always nice to get together with friends. Everyone packed up their gear and headed for home. Thankfully everyone made it home safe.
Thanks to everyone who worked to make the rally happen and to those who attended.
